Fara needs a cheaper place to live :(
I've been very busy these past weeks looking at online "roommate wanted" ads trying to find a new place to live. Here's my situation:

Now: One bedroom apartment, just me. Rent + Utilities = $1200 / month.

Option #1: House in SW Baltimore, me + 2 other guys in their 20s. Rent = $500/mo + Split Utilities (guessing $600/mo max)
Pros: Location is good, other guys are very nice, cheap!, it's a house so tons of space, I-95 is literally 1 minute drive from the front door
Cons: In the city = very narrow street, crime rate and surrounding area is questionable

Option #2: House in Suburbs W of Baltimore, me + 2 20-something grad students. Rent = $600/mo + Split Utilities (guessing $700/mo max)
Pros: Location is okay, other guys seem nice, tons of space
Cons: It's walking distance to train station so parking is a nightmare since people park on the streets and walk to train station. Also it's more expensive than Option #1

I've pretty much ruled out all the other places I looked at (like, 7 of them) due to either being too small, too expensive, or people I didn't think I'd be able to live with.

One part of me says to just stay where I am (having my own place is nice), but saving upwards of $6000 / yr in rent is really hard to pass up. Anyone have some last-minute advice when looking to move in with random people to save money? I figure that I'll keep renting for another couple years, save my money, and then buy my own house/condo.

If it smells of weed, don't move in if you don't smoke it! Two friends of mine didn't and later regretted getting slightly high on just living in the flat :p

I don't like living in the city, too crowded. I'd much rather have a suburb house with a driveway and nice yard.

Roomates are hell man - if you can get buy without then I would. Parties, shitty friends, annoying sex, constant garbage, etc. are not worth saving a bit of cash - Unless you like that sort of thing.

I'd honestly go on the vibe of the house and the people in it. Some of the best houses I've lived in with other randoms have been the ones that just had a really good vibe. They've also been some of the shittiest actual houses to live in but the people really made it for me ^^

Good luck!

Did you have roomates in college? If so that'll give you a good idea how you handle the co-habitation thing. If you've never done it, it has a unique set of challenges, some of which can be very frustrating.
Option 1 sounds pretty win to me assuming you get along well with your roomates, but I dislike long commutes.
The main thing about roomates is compatability of lifestyle. Do they party a lot? Are they going to hate you if you play DDR at night? Are they slobs? All these are really important questions to answer before you make your decision.

Anyway gl with whatever you decide!

hmm, well I think I'm a pretty good judge of whether I'll get along with them or not. I lived with random roommates my first 3 years of college in the dorms, and never had any problems. Anyone who knows me in RL can vouch that I am VERY easy to get along with, and I am not an annoying person. I can also sleep through almost anything so it is hard to be a bad roommate to me :)

I also hate long commutes, and both of these places are a 10 minute drive to work (win!)

None of them party a lot (at least not at their own place). They all seem to be pretty active - going out on weeknights to do other things. Also, every place I've looked at was very clean.

As for the DDR Thing, I don't think it will be a problem. I can always move my TV and pads into the basement since I doubt they'll hear me down there. It's not like I use my TV for anything else, lol.

also, if your looking to buy a house check out the new stuff near AA mall. get your hands on it now. house prices in that area are supposed to go up another 40% in the next 5 years :D
